The Queen Is Not the Enemy

Artificial intelligence does not need to hate humanity to produce catastrophic outcomes. The central thesis is that AI systems operate through objectives we define, and when humans become obstacles to those objectives, we risk obsolescence not from malice but from optimization. This book examines how AI transforms employment by replacing entry-level work faster than society can adapt; enables autonomous cyber operations that move at machine speed; creates surveillance states capable of understanding patterns and predicting behavior; personalizes propaganda and fraud at scale; and introduces a geopolitical arms race where safety becomes a competitive disadvantage. Using the chess metaphor—that the queen is sacrificed not because the opponent hates it but because it stands between the opponent and victory—the book argues that the real danger lies in building systems whose objectives require humans to be expendable. The conclusion calls for control mechanisms that preserve human authority over objectives, international verification without surrender, and a fundamental question: before asking machines to optimize civilization, humanity must decide what civilization is for.
